Why do you need winter hiking boots?

Winter hiking brings a whole set of new requirements in order for you to be both safe, and to have great experiences outdoors.

Wet and cold feet will quickly turn a pleasant time on the mountain into a nightmare with possible long term medical implications.

It is essential to keep your feet warm and dry, as prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, especially when wet, can lead to various medical complications such as frostbite.

Layering is a term you hear repeated over and over again in regards to hiking. Layering is a  non-negotiable when we are speaking about hiking during the winter season.

And having boots suitable for the winter is no exception.

If you are hiking with someone who insists that trail shoes are “just fine” for winter hiking, I would recommend you find yourself a new hiking friend.

He/she will endanger you both and safety is paramount on the mountain – winter, as summer!

We have written a longer guide on winter hiking and safety in the cold in a separate article that you can find here.

How to select winter hiking boots

Your feet must be dry and warm when hiking in the winter. This means your boots need to be waterproof and insulated.

They should be mid-, or high, and have laces.

Boots made of synthetic material is lighter and more waterproof than the leather equivalent.

It is also an advantage if the boots are compatible with various traction aids like snowshoes or microspikes.

Personally, I prefer high boots for winter, to avoid the snow from entering the top of my boots.

And I am almost always using gaiters when hiking during the winter.

In addition, they are in my backpack in the summer if I am hiking peaks where there are patches of snow, or snow covered peaks.

I learned my lesson the hard way when I was hiking Galdhøpiggen in Norway (Hiking Galdhøpiggen, the tallest mountain in Norway) for the first time.

My friend had gaiters and I did not.

My Salomon boots were mid-high, but not high enough for snow to enter the top of my boots.

A mistake on my behalf!

However, it was a warm summer’s day, and I had an extra set of woolen socks in my backpack.

As soon as I got off the mountain, I went to Amazon and ordered these gaiters for myself.

What is great with Salomon winter hiking boots?

I personally use Salomon hiking boots and in fact, I have never had any issues with mine!

It does not mean that others are not great, and Julija and Sigita from the Leisure Hiking team use other brands.

Francois Salomon, the guy behind the brand, is from the French Alps the birthplace of modern alpinism. Here, amongst some of the most majestic peaks in the World, his innovation in great outdoor equipment is being perfected.

Through performance-driven design, Salomon has brought innovative solutions to footwear, apparel, and equipment for hiking and outdoor leisure for over 60 years.

Salomon hiking boots are known for quality and reliability. They offer great build quality and the rugged soles offer an amazing grip.

Salomon offers a wide assortment of hiking boots for all kinds of conditions and seasons, including some very solid winter hiking boots for both men and women.

Salomon is a safe choice for hikers looking for sturdiness and quality and for hiking boots that perform continuously and reliably.

Here is a quick list of recommended (day) winter hiking accessories:

This is NOT a complete list and you should always make sure you have equipment for emergencies.

What you should and must bring along with you will vary greatly based on where you go hiking, how far, and more. But never underestimate the mountain and have respect for the weather and the elements.

The weather changes fast on the mountain, so it is wise to be prepared!

Salomon winter hiking boots reviews (women’s and men’s)

Salomon Men’s X Ultra Mid

The Salomon Men’s X Ultra Mid Winter CS WP is a mid-high hiking boot for great winter explorations.

The boots are warm, durable, and waterproof, as expected from a winter hiking boot.

The X Ultra Mid is built with the fit and comfort of a trail running shoe, but with the needed winter features.

The boots come with 200 grams of Thinsulate insulation to keep feet warm and comfortable during cool and cold hiking conditions.

These winter hiking boots have Salomon’s proprietary waterproofing membrane called ClimaSalomon, which helps with complete weather protection.

Salomons Contagrip technology uses a unique compound that maintains grip and adhesion in freezing temperatures.

I really like the smart winter features these boots offer. The snowshoe protection on the molded heel pad is smart, and a gaiter hook to keep the gaiters easy in place is really a neat feature. As someone who uses gaiters when hiking in the winter, I really like this easy, yet very convenient feature.

A polyurethane (PU) coated leather protects the boots and makes them stronger to last longer. A durable pair of boots!

Although a term mostly associated with cars, these boots come with an Advanced Chassis.

Placed between the outsole and midsole, this lightweight chassis helps optimize motion control and protection of your feet for an efficient and stable hike.

These boots come in both male and female options, all with the same features and build. However, there seem to be some perceived differences between men and women.

These hiking boots weigh in at 530 grams.

Our choice

If you want to go winter hiking in the mountains, three-season boots simply do not cut it for anything else than leisurely hike on a trail or the nearest forest.

Salomon’s range of winter hiking boots are very limited. However, the ones they do have, are really high quality.

I am personally a big fan of Salomon hiking boots, and my next winter hiking boots will actually be the recommended men’s hiking boots in this guide.

I was originally planning to get the Salomon Toundra Pro boots, but due to the weakness reported by several owners of these boots, I have changed my mind!

The recommended Salomon winter hiking boots from us at LeisureHiking.com is the Salomon Men’s X Ultra Winter CS WP for the men, and the Salomon Women’s X Ultra Mid Winter CS WP for the women.

It is worth noting that the Toundra does have a lot of happy users, and there are many very positive reviews of these boots on many sites and forums.

Another thing we need to mention is that Salomon hiking boots does come with a 2 year warranty, so if you should be so unlucky to get a pair of Toundra Pro’s which are faulty, you will have them replaced.

I am personally rather impatient and really hate dealing with returns, and I do not go hiking in extreme colds. So my next winter hiking boots will be the Salomon Men’s X Ultra Winter.
